[5-minute read \/ texto tambi\u00e9n disponible en espa\u00f1ol] Last week, we held the first webinar of our \u201cEntrepreneurship during changing times\u201d Series in which Mat\u00edas Muchnick, CEO and co-founder of NotCo, one of the fastest growing Food Tech companies in Latin America<\/strong>, provided us with valuable insight into the entrepreneurial world and going global.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation lasted 45 minutes and was moderated by fellow Luksic Scholar, Felipe Magofke<\/a><\/strong>. Thanks to all of those who joined and in case you missed the event, we\u2019ve summarized it for you below:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to disrupt the system…<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Mat\u00edas started the conversation by providing us with some background as to how he got into the Food Tech industry as a finance major. He said, \u201cthere is no scientific consent behind identifying problems in an industry – and when you get that it\u2019s because you have a broken and obsolete system, as well as a conflict of interest. I\u2019m a finance student and I worked in JP Morgan in Hong Kong, which has nothing to do with food space, but I was a consumer as well, I was not just<\/em> a finance major. What I wanted to do was disrupt an industry and in order to disrupt a system you have to learn about it.<\/strong>\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mat\u00edas referred to his first start-up in 2012, Eggless, as the classic garage story. \u201cWe built a facility in my friend\u2019s house and shortly after I sold that company understanding that it was not the food industry I needed to disrupt; rather it was to create a new technology in order for this industry to work better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is when Mat\u00edas went on to study biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and thought up the idea of NotCo before he had actually even started the company.<\/strong> He also met Karim and Pablo, NotCo\u2019s two other co-founders, in the US and they decided to come back to Chile to start this food revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mat\u00edas explained that they did so with their own money: \u201cwe were broke – friends and family were the first investors and we created a low-key energy facility in Macul. It was a laboratory that was going bankrupt so we rented that and spent 4.5 years creating a company that is now represented in four different countries and with four different products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the discussion carried on, Felipe asked Mat\u00edas to provided some entrepreneurial advice, especially in changing times like these. Mat\u00edas said, \u201cone of the most important things in a start-up career is to do it yourself… this way, you learn from experience and are able to get out of your comfort zone, always asking yourself “what’s next?<\/em>“<\/strong>. He also mentioned four main pieces of advice:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. SELF-AWARENESS<\/strong>: You should know who you are as a founder – what you do well and what you don\u2019t do well. That way, you\u2019ll start to get a sense of who it is that you need to hire, which leads to my next point: team.<\/li>
  2. TEAM<\/strong>: You should gather people who complement each other and build upon who you are as a visionary. That\u2019s the only way you\u2019ll have a team able to comply with your vision more accurately. <\/li>
  3. VISION<\/strong>: You should define what success looks like and share it with others all the time, constantly and consistently because sometimes you may have it in your head and assume that everyone knows it, but that isn\u2019t the case. <\/li>
  4. EXECUTION<\/strong>: You have to be a visionary in the grand scheme of things, however, you must execute this vision or at least have people who can execute it for you. A good idea without execution is worth 0. Money and all of the funding you could have is worth 0 if you don\u2019t have a great team in terms of execution.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Complementing the above, Mat\u00edas also stressed the importance of human capital: “you always have to invest in technology and people; talent that is, making sure your human capital is specialized and capable<\/strong>. This is difficult to find in Chile, where not everyone has the mindset<\/em> to dare to begin a start-up; therefore, we need to make things happen so that other things happen, as in a sort of contagion… and act as a “pay it forward,” he said, adding that he believes it is important to have a diverse team to achieve the goal of becoming a global company. “That’s another issue I notice here in Chile – companies tend to think to only be from or located in Chile, rather than climbing internationally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cAnd what about COVID-19\u2019s effect on your business?\u201d<\/em>,<\/strong> asked Felipe. Mat\u00edas responded by saying that working from home has certainly added a layer of complexity<\/strong>, however, it has provided the possibility of increasing one\u2019s commitment to a company’s employees<\/strong>, and its efficiency. \u201cIt is always useful to put yourself in a crisis scenario and to have a crisis committee because things change daily,\u201d <\/strong>he <\/strong>commented. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As the event came to an end, Mat\u00edas concluded by reemphasizing the importance of a team. “Having the best people in your company, to be the best company,”<\/strong> he said confidently. And in regards to competition and growth, when one becomes successful, the competition increases, therefore, \u201cit\u2019s vital to be clear about what it takes to be number one in the market and always be ahead of the curve.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    La semana pasada, realizamos el primer seminario web de nuestra serie \u201cEmprendimiento en tiempos de cambio\u201d en la que Mat\u00edas Muchnick, CEO y cofundador de NotCo, una de las empresas de tecnolog\u00eda de alimentos de m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido crecimiento en Am\u00e9rica Latina, nos entreg\u00f3 valiosa informaci\u00f3n sobre el mundo empresarial y la globalizaci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Quer\u00eda revolucionar al sistema. ..<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Mat\u00edas inici\u00f3 la conversaci\u00f3n brind\u00e1ndonos algunos antecedentes sobre c\u00f3mo se incorpor\u00f3 a la industria de la tecnolog\u00eda alimentaria como especialista en finanzas. Dijo que \u201cno existe un consentimiento cient\u00edfico detr\u00e1s de la identificaci\u00f3n de problemas en una industria y, cuando se obtiene, es porque el sistema est\u00e1 roto y obsoleto, as\u00ed como un conflicto de intereses. Estudi\u00e9 finanzas y trabaj\u00e9 en JP Morgan en Hong Kong, lo cual no tiene nada que ver con la industria de los alimentos\u2026 pero tambi\u00e9n era consumidor, no s\u00f3lo estudiante de finanzas. Lo que quer\u00eda hacer era alterar una industria y ,para alterar un sistema, hay que aprender al respecto<\/strong>“.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mat\u00edas se refiri\u00f3 a su primera start-up en 2012, llamada Eggless, como la cl\u00e1sica historia del garaje. \u201cConstruimos una instalaci\u00f3n en la casa de mi amigo y poco despu\u00e9s vend\u00ed esa empresa entendiendo que no era la industria alimentaria lo que necesitaba revolucionar, sino m\u00e1s bien crear una nueva tecnolog\u00eda para que esta industria funcionara mejor”.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fue entonces cuando Mat\u00edas pas\u00f3 a estudiar bioqu\u00edmica en la Universidad de Berkeley, California, y se le ocurri\u00f3 la idea de NotCo, incluso antes de siqueira haber creado la empresa<\/strong>. All\u00ed en Estados Unidos conoci\u00f3 a Karim y Pablo, los otros dos cofundadores de NotCo y, juntos, decidieron regresar a Chile para comenzar esta revoluci\u00f3n alimentaria.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mat\u00edas explic\u00f3 que lo partieron con su propio dinero: \u201cest\u00e1bamos en quiebra, amigos y familiares fueron los primeros inversores, y creamos una instalaci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda de bajo perfil en Macul. Era un laboratorio que estaba en quiebra, as\u00ed que lo arrendamos y pasamos 4, 5 a\u00f1os creando una empresa que ahora est\u00e1 representada en cuatro pa\u00edses diferentes y con cuatro productos diferentes\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A medida que avanzaba la discusi\u00f3n, Felipe le pidi\u00f3 a Mat\u00edas que le brindara algunos consejos empresariales, especialmente en tiempos cambiantes como estos. Mat\u00edas expuso: \u201cuna de las cosas m\u00e1s importantes en la carrera de una start-up<\/em> es hacerlo t\u00fa mismo… De esta manera, aprendes de la experiencia y puedes salir de tu zona de confort, siempre pregunt\u00e1ndote \u201c\u00bfqu\u00e9 sigue?\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Asimismo, mencion\u00f3 cuatro consejos principales:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. CONOCIMIENTO DE TI MISMO<\/strong>: debes saber qui\u00e9n eres como fundador: qu\u00e9 haces bien y qu\u00e9 no haces bien para comenzar a tener una idea de qui\u00e9n(es) necesitas contratar, lo que lleva al siguiente punto: equipo.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. EQUIPO<\/strong>: Debes reunir personas que se complementen entre s\u00ed. Esa es la \u00fanica forma en que tendr\u00e1s un equipo capaz de cumplir con la visi\u00f3n de forma precisa, que est\u00e9n alineados con tu visi\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. VISI\u00d3N<\/strong>: Debes definir qu\u00e9 es el \u00e9xito para ti y compartirlo con los dem\u00e1s todo el tiempo, de manera constante y consistente, porque a veces puedes tenerlo en tu cabeza y asumir que todos lo saben, pero ese no es el caso.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. EJECUCI\u00d3N<\/strong>: Tienes que ser un visionario en el gran esquema de las cosas, sin embargo, debes ejecutar esta visi\u00f3n, o al menos tener personas que puedan ejecutarla por ti. Una buena idea sin ejecuci\u00f3n vale cero. El dinero y toda la financiaci\u00f3n que podr\u00edas tener vale cero si no tienes un gran equipo en t\u00e9rminos de ejecuci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Complementando lo anterior, Mat\u00edas tambi\u00e9n destac\u00f3 la importancia del capital humano: “siempre hay que invertir en tecnolog\u00eda y en personas, en talento. Es decir, que tu capital humano sea especializado y capaz<\/strong>. Esto es dif\u00edcil de encontrar en Chile, donde no todo el mundo tiene la mentalidad para atreverse a comenzar una start-up<\/em>; por lo tanto, necesitamos hacer que las cosas sucedan para que sucedan otra, como en una especie de contagio… y actuar como con un “pago por adelantado\u201d. Y agreg\u00f3 que cree que es importante tener un equipo diverso para lograr el objetivo de convertirse en una empresa global. “Ese es otro problema que noto aqu\u00ed en Chile: las empresas tienden a pensar que s\u00f3lo son de Chile o est\u00e1n ubicadas en Chile, en lugar de escalar internacionalmente”.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201c\u00bfY el efecto de COVID-19 en tu negocio?\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, pregunt\u00f3 Felipe. Mat\u00edas respondi\u00f3 diciendo que trabajar desde casa ciertamente ha agregado una capa de complejidad pero que, sin embargo, ha brindado la posibilidad de aumentar el compromiso con los colaboradores de la empresa y su eficiencia. \u201cSiempre es \u00fatil ponerse en un escenario de crisis y tener un comit\u00e9 de crisis, porque las cosas cambian a diario\u201d<\/strong>, coment\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cuando el evento lleg\u00f3 a su fin, Mat\u00edas concluy\u00f3 enfatizando nuevamente la importancia del equipo de trabajo. “Tener a las mejores personas en tu empresa, para ser la mejor empresa”<\/strong>, dijo con seguridad. En lo que respecta a la competencia y el crecimiento, cuando uno tiene \u00e9xito, la competencia aumenta, por lo tanto, “es vital tener claro lo que se necesita para ser el n\u00famero uno en el mercado y estar siempre por delante de la curva”,<\/strong> a\u00f1adi\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
