Family Business and the Business of the Family
An interactive workshop led by Beth Fisher-Yoshida, Academic Director of the Master in Negotiation and Conflict Resolutionoffered by Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies; she is a facilitator, educator, mediator and executive coach, who partners with clients to develop initiatives that will strengthen their core negotiation skills and effectiveness.
Family business can be thought of as small mom and pop shops or as behemoth businesses, such as WalMart in the US or Cencosud, Ripley, and CMPC in Chile. There are certain characteristics unique to these types of business because of the added dimension of working with family members. And as in any family or work situation conflicts occur.
In this session we will:
- Frame what we mean by family business
- Identify typical types of conflicts in family businesses
- Use a model to frame the type of conflict that is occurring
- Apply the framework to a sample case study
- Learn three tips on preventing/addressing conflicts in a family business.
